Overall, I am quite pleased with our preliminary task as I think the camera shots, sound, editing and mise-en-scene helped to portray our theme well. It also challenged us as this was our first video together as a group and our first time using professional recording cameras and iMovie. We also managed to portray the plot well and it still looked fairly professional.
We used a variety of camera shots in our preliminary task such as shot-reverse-shot, match-on-action, close ups, long shots and continuous shots. By using lots of camera shots, this meant we fitted our brief and it helped our video to look more professional and it made it more engaging for the audience to watch.
For the sound, we helped to tell the story by adding the same sound which was a low trumpet sound whenever the 'stalker' appeared in our clip. This helped to build the tension for our plot so it meant that we were able to show what genre our clip was more easily. Also, as we repeated the same sound multiple times, it meant that the audience were able to recognise when the 'stalker' was going to appear so it met the audience's expectations in a positive way. In addition, we had footsteps at the beginning of the clip which helped us to set the mood and the tone for our clip. Finally, throughout the clip, we had an eerie sound effect which created a slightly distorted feel for the audience. However, we could improve our sound on the shot-reverse-shot as when the two girls are having the conversation, it makes it sound as if the conversation is slightly cut off so it is not completely clear on what the girl is saying.
Our use of editing for the clip is used well as it helps to keep up the fast pace which means the audience's attention is not lost so the audience do not find it tedious to watch. For example, when there is the continuous shot of the girl walking from the corridor to the locker area, using our editing skills, we sped the walking up so we had good continuity and the story was still well told but the audience didn't get bored. Also, by using our knowledge of transitions, we were able to allow the clips to run smoothly yet it still fitted our genre.
For our preliminary task, we had to film it at school. This influenced what our plot was as our location had to be the school so our plot had to be suitable to match the location. I think that our plot matched the location well as in the part of clip where the lockers are used, it is quite dark so this helps to create the mysterious underlying tone of our piece. Also, the long corridors helped to emphasise our theme as it made it more obvious that the girl was being followed.
